Staying Ahead: How North Central Florida Wins the Next Decade
Tourism is not just visits and room nights. It is paychecks, small-business sales, and the neighborhood events that make our coastal communities feel alive. In St. Johns, Flagler, Volusia and Brevard, staying ahead means treating tourism like the essential economic driver that it is. Here is how we keep our lead.
Start with a strong destination brand. People choose feelings first, facts second. Your brand should promise a clear experience and deliver it at every touchpoint. Align hotels, attractions, downtowns, and events under one promise so the visitor gets a seamless trip from their internet browser to check-out.
Invest in smart marketing. Use data to reach the right traveler at the right time. Work with your local Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) to pool budgets and measure results. Visitor-paid tourist development taxes, used primarily for marketing and tourism projects, generate tax dollars from visitors reducing pressure on residents.
Win with resident satisfaction. Happy locals are the best advertising. Keep beaches clean, parking clear and communication honest during busy periods. When residents see the benefits, they welcome guests and support growth.
Spread visitation across seasons and places. Pair iconic hits like St. Augustine’s history and Daytona’s beaches with trails, waterways, space-coast viewing and arts districts. Create themed itineraries that push day-trippers to stay overnight. A single extra night can double local impact.
Hospitality is a true career launcher. A recent CareerSource Central Florida study shows that entry-level hospitality and tourism jobs pay 26% to 34% higher than the average starting wage across our region. That means within our tourism industry young people in Northeast Florida can begin their careers with stronger starting pay, real-world experience and clear pathways for advancement. Partner with schools and colleges on training, internships, and fast-track certifications. Great service is your most defensible advantage, and a well-prepared workforce strengthens your community from the inside out.
Plan for storms and shocks. Have a recovery playbook ready. Keep fresh photo and video of unaffected areas. Coordinate emergency messaging with your DMO, county and state partners. The goal is to keep bookings on the books and help residents rebound fast.
Lead together. Tourism works best when city halls, DMOs, attractions, hotels and cultural groups pull in the same direction. Meet often. Share numbers. Celebrate wins.
North Central Florida has what the world wants: history, shoreline, space, arts and authentic towns that are the best places to live and work in the world. Staying ahead is simple to say and hard to do.
- Tell a clear story.
- Measure what matters.
- Take care of residents.
- Prepare for tomorrow.
Do these well, and our region will keep winning the trips, the talent and the investments that power “economic vitality” with a vibrant place to live and visit.
