The “Mr. Fusion” device used to power Marty McFly’s time-traveling DeLorean in the Back to the Future movies could soon be a reality.

A California company, NDB, is developing a battery using nuclear waste that could run a smartphone or electric car for up to a decade without requiring a charge.

The concept is similar to technology used in solar panels, except the NDB battery uses radioactive materials to generate electricity instead of sunlight.

According to a media release, the radioactive battery is safe for commercial use, and the company expects to begin selling the battery to commercial partners, including space agencies for long-duration missions, within the next two years.

A battery system for personal electronics and electronic vehicles is also in the works.
