There’s a lot going on in Volusia County’s most populous city, and population growth is at the top of the list.

According to a vintage population release from the U.S. Census Bureau, Deltona was one of seven cities across the nation – including two others in Florida – to cross the 100,000-population threshold at 100,513. Plantation and Sunrise in Florida joined Deltona in hitting the milestone, along with two Texas cities, Georgetown and San Angelo; Tracy, California; and Federal Way, Washington.

Jacksonville also hit a significant milestone, crossing the 1 million-population mark along with Fort Worth, Texas. The 16,365 residents who moved to Jacksonville between 2023 and 2024 vaulted the city into the Top 10 most populous cities in the county.

Deltona Mayor Santiago Avila Jr. said the city’s population is likely even higher than the Census Bureau data shows.

“Crossing the 100,000-population threshold is a significant milestone for our city, but I believe our actual population is likely closer to 115,000 to 120,000 based on recent trends and housing growth,” he said. “Deltona is now the largest city in Volusia County and the second largest in Central Florida – positioning us as a key player in the region’s future.”

Avila said reaching the 100,000-population mark is a reflection of the city’s health and stability.

“This milestone is more than just a number; it represents a community that’s thriving,” he said. “Families and individuals continue to choose Deltona for its affordability, safety, and strong sense of community.”

Reaching the population milestone also has implications for the city’s economic future, Avila said.

“From an economic standpoint, hitting this population benchmark is also a game changer,” he said. “Many national and big-box companies use population as a key metric when determining where to expand, and we are already seeing increased interest from businesses looking to relocate or establish a presence here. This growth gives us a tremendous opportunity to attract the types of amenities, services, and jobs that our residents have long been asking for.”

Avila said as mayor he is committed to making sure the city’s growth is measured and managed.

“That includes strengthening our infrastructure, investing in public safety, supporting educational partnerships, and advancing our efforts to create a true downtown district that will serve as the heart of Deltona’s future,” he said. “This is a transformative time for our city, and I’m excited about what lies ahead.”
